What Is Long COVID? Understanding the Pandemic’s Mysterious Fallout > News > Yale Medicine
Originally published: April 15, 2024. Updated: June 4, 2024
Just weeks after the first cases of COVID-19 hit U.S. shores, an op-ed appeared in The New York Times titled “We Need to Talk About What Coronavirus Recoveries Look Like: They're a lot more complicated than most people realize.”
...
Unlike most diseases, Long COVID was first described not by doctors, but by the patients themselves. Even the term “Long COVID” was coined by a patient. Dr. Elisa Perego, an honorary research fellow at University College in London, came up with the hashtag #LongCOVID when tweeting about her own experience with the post-COVID syndrome. The term went viral and suddenly social media, and then the media itself, was full of these stories.
Complaints like "I can't seem to concentrate anymore" or "I'm constantly fatigued throughout the day" became increasingly common, seemingly appearing out of nowhere. With nothing abnormal turning up from their many thorough lab tests, patients and their physicians were left feeling helpless and frustrated.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has defined Long COVID as the "continuation or development of new symptoms three months after the initial SARS-CoV-2 infection, with these symptoms lasting for at least two months with no other explanation." This deliberately broad definition reflects the complex nature of this syndrome. We now understand that these symptoms are wide-ranging, including heart palpitations, cough, nausea, fatigue, cognitive impairment (commonly referred to as "brain fog"), and more. Also, many who experience Long COVID following an acute infection face an elevated risk of such medical complications as blood clots and (type 2) diabetes.
In April 2024, an estimated 5.3% of all adults in the United States reported having Long COVID, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Data from the CDC suggest that Long COVID disproportionately affects women, and individuals between the ages of 40 and 59 have the highest reported rates of developing this post-acute infection syndrome.
...
Inderjit Singh, MBChB, a YSM assistant professor specializing in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine, and director of the Pulmonary Vascular Program, is actively engaged in clinical trials aimed at uncovering the fundamental underpinnings of Long COVID.
...
Through this work, a significant revelation emerged. They observed that patients grappling with Long COVID and facing exercise difficulties were unable to efficiently extract oxygen from their bloodstream during physical exertion. This discovery identifies a specific cause underlying the biological underpinnings of Long COVID.
... Dr. Singh, along with other researchers, is focused on the identification of blood-based markers to assess the severity of Long COVID. For example, a research group, led by Akiko Iwasaki, PhD, Sterling Professor of Immunobiology and Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, and director of the Center for Infection & Immunity at YSM, most recently created a new method to classify Long COVID severity with circulating immune markers.
Further investigations conducted by Dr. Singh's team identified distinctive protein signatures in the blood of Long COVID patients, which correlated with the degree of Long COVID severity. Researchers identified two major and distinct blood profiles among the patients. Some of them exhibited blood profiles indicating that excessive inflammation played a prominent role in their condition, while others displayed profiles indicative of impaired metabolism.
...
Researchers currently believe that the impairment of a spectrum of key bodily functions may contribute to these diverse symptoms. These potential mechanisms include compromised immune system function, damage to blood vessels, and direct harm to the brain and nervous system. Importantly, it's likely that most patients experience symptoms arising from multiple underlying causes, which complicates both the diagnosis and treatment of Long COVID.
...
The last word from Lisa Sanders, MD:
I’m the internist who sees patients at Yale New Haven Health’s Multidisciplinary Long COVID Care Center. In our clinic, patients are examined by a variety of specialists to determine the best next steps for these complex patients. Sometimes that entails more testing. Often patients have had extensive testing even before they arrive, and far too often—when all the tests are normal—both doctors and patients worry that their symptoms are “all in their head.”
One of our first tasks is to reassure patients that many parts of Long COVID don’t show up on tests. We don’t know enough about the cause of many of these symptoms to create a test for them. The problem is not with the patient with the symptoms, but of the science surrounding them. If any good can be said to come out of this pandemic, it will be a better understanding of Long COVID and many of the other post-acute infection syndromes that have existed as long as the infections themselves.

Chapter 10 of Little Flame! Still can't believe I've actually gotten this far. I've admittedly never been to a pregnancy ultrasound before, but I figure y'all won't mind too much if I bullshit a little for this. Enjoy!
~~Little Flame, Chapter 10~~
Dr. Jaya Singh took pride in her work. Bachelors at Homeward University, PhD in Frague, years of work as the finest surgeon in Deliham's largest and most prestigious hospital. Her carpal tunnel may have cost her that line of work, but she was hardly about to give up her standards of quality! Home's resident doctor's office was clean, bright and welcoming, as was the doctor herself at all times. She'd accept nothing less.
She was making her way round the clinic that afternoon, checking equipment and watering the small collection of potted plants when she heard a knock at the door. "Ah, right on time!" She announced to the one other person there: her girlfriend and nurse Bea, who sat bored in the corner with paperwork. "I'll let them in."
"Let me do it!" The monster piped up, rushing over.
Jaya chuckled and stepped out of the way. "After you then, my love."
Putting on her best work face (which was not at all different from her normal expression), Bea opened the door and said "Welcome! Please have a seat, and we'll be with you in a moment."
"Heh, gladly," came the reply from Frank, waddling in belly first and groaning from the effort of his walk. "God, you'll have to start wheeling me in here pretty soon. Not sure how much longer I can keep myself upright with all this weight."
Behind them, Eddie hovered, gentle but nervous as he often was nowadays. "You really are gettin' awful big," he said, then mumbled, "Hope it's nothing to worry about."
"Oh, don't be scared," Jaya reassured, putting a hand on his shoulder. "That just means you'll have a big, healthy baby!"
The man & his mate shared an uneasy glance as she toddled off to prepare the machines.
For the next several minutes, the three in the waiting room chatted, Jaya ocasionally calling to them from where she could hear in the other room. It wasn't a big office, but then again it hardly needed to be in such a small town. According to her it was just the right size, and according to the rest of the neighbors it was lovely to finally have a licensed doctor around.
Not that Poppy didn't do her best fixing scrapes and bruises or a stuffy nose. She certainly did do a good job with that, her gentle and caring demeanor a large part of what had made Jaya and Bea fall in love with her. But the bird was nervous, and quite unfortunately out of her depth dealing with anything big- like what was going on right now.
Jaya walked in just as Frank was telling the other two about a centipede they'd caught- bright red and white like a candy cane, with curly pincers. "Sounds lovely," the elephant said- then snort-trumpeted as 3 heads whipped round at the same time to face her. "Sorry, sorry," she giggled. "Didn't mean to startle you. If you'd like to come back though, the room's been set up for your scan."
In the back, once Frank was comfortable on the bed, Jaya began her procedure. "Health & heartrate are steady," she noted, "blood pressure 110/60, no cause for concern on behalf of the parent. Now let's get a good look at that little one."
The grey let out a miniscule squeak of surprise as the gel touched his skin. "Cold," they chuckled embarassedly, earning a pat on the hand from the husband sat beside him. "There we go!" The doctor announced triumphantly as a grainy grey picture appeared on the monitor. "There's your baby, looking perfect as can be!"
Bea gasped. "How cute!"
"Yea!" Eddie added, a big smile on his face. "What do you think h...
Honey? Frankie?"
Frank sniffled & wiped the tears from his eyes, reaching out to touch the screen with one hand as the other came to rest on their belly. "There you are sweetheart," he whispered, heart overflowing with love. "I can finally see you!"
Eddie leaned in and pressed their foreheads together, giving his love a gentle kiss. "We can see 'em," he repeated. "It's really real."
"Looks to be a healthy baby girl," Jaya said happily, motioning to her assistant to take some notes. "Her vitals are steady, no abnormalities that I can see..." she moved the scanner a little over. "Yes, yes, it looks normal."
Just then, Eddie leapt forward to point at a spot on the screen. "Wait, what's that? Is that supposed to be there?"
Jaya looked closer. Yes, there did appear to be some kind of blur beside the legs of the fetus... one that wasn't explained by the rest of her anatomy. "Huh, that's odd," the doctor remarked.
"Is it...i-is there..somethin' wrong?" the man stammered, up on his feet now and wringing his hands with worry.
"We don't know that for sure..."
"But it could be! You just said yourself it's abnormal!" He was starting to hyperventilate. Frank also looked frightened now, heartrate picking up rapidly as they turned to her for some explanation.
"C-calm down!" Jaya said quickly, trying her best to remain professional as she fought the rising tide of panic in the room. Her first ultrasound in years, the first here in this town, and it was going like this? "I'll try to...get a better look."
With trepidation, she rolled the scanner across Frank's belly. What would it show? Some kind of tumor, or birth defect? It could (she hoped) just be a tecnical error. But what if...it wasn't?
As though in slow motion, the gray waves of scanner static parted. And what was on the other side?
Another baby, clear as day, with his legs resting right beside those of his sister.
Jaya squealed in delight & relief, trunk tapping the screen where their little surprise was. "Wow! Would you look at that!"
Frank laughed loudly as well, hand descending from the tangles he'd begun to make in their hair. "No wonder it felt like so much is going in there!" He said. "That makes-"
His words were cut off as a blur of motion sailed in front of them, Eddie almost fainting until an orange figure caught him and pushed him back upright. "Woah, e-easy there big guy!" Bea chuckled anxiously. "You almost squished me."
"Twins..." he murmured, dizzy. "We're having twins."
The rest of the visit went very well, no further surprises (good or bad) being found. "Please do let me know if anything happens that concerns you," Jaya told the pair as they stood in her doorway. "We all had quite the spook earlier, and I should like to avoid that in future."
"Can do!" Frank beamed. He was pretty much walking on air right now, all their previous worries and complaints vanishing beneath the radiant excitement of a parent-to-be. As the two bid their farewells and their promises to return for another appointment, he snuggled up close to their lover. "Can you believe it?" They giggled. "Twins!"
"Mmhmm, it's excitin'," Eddie said, though he didn't exactly seem convinced. Or perhaps he was simply lost in thought, doing mental calculations at high speed.
Frank cocked an eyebrow. "Hey, what's going on? Are you still worried?"
At this, the man finally looked back and smiled. "Aww I'm doin' alright love, just thinkin'."
"About what?"
"Well," he said, "We'll probably need to go back to Howdy's. Gonna need a lot more stuff now."

Arshi Fiesta 2024 Theme : Colours/Stages of Love!
Tumblr media
Moodboard 4 : Medical AU! x Arshi
You make my cardiac muscles pump blood through my vascular system really quick.
What if Dr. Arnav Singh Raizada— the most egoistic, well known heart surgeon in India stumbles into a Veterinary Clinic only to end up relearning the purpose of his own heart?
What does the theme have to do with the moodboard? Well, technically— nothing. It's the theme for this month, June 2024 for we are celebrating IPK's 13th Anniversary! But it's also something you can choose to incorporate in your creation to help with the visual/written world building. You don't "have to" use it. Consider it as one of the individual prompts if you want to. :)

A New Lease On Life
Have you ever felt like being yourself limits you in a way? Like being born to a particular family or culture limits your potential and often how the world views you?
My name is Dr. Kurpreet Singh. I'm 27, single and longing for a life other than my own.
It's a well-known fact that Indian culture gives little freedom to the children. Great expectations from parents, often using the success to flaunt in others' faces. Despite being a well-studied and successful man of medicine, I must be causing my mother and father a great deal of disappointment. They keep setting me up for arranged marriages, but I know it's all for their gain, and whilst I've been introduced to some absolutely beautiful women, they're not exactly what I'm looking for.
During my education, I was envious of the other boys, they could laze about, talk anything they'd like, date anyone they'd like. My life was pre-determined, focus on my studies, ace every test. I love my parents, but the life they forced upon me doesn't exactly offer the freedoms that many of my peers take for granted. It seems clear to me my life was mapped out in their eyes even from conception; create a child prodigy, marry him into a wealthy family, have some beautiful children, die securing a promising future for their grandchildren. A noble plan I guess, but what about what I want?
It took some persuasion, but I was able to move from my parents' home into my own flat. My mother of course always hit with the obvious comments. 'Why are you settling for a flat? You need a mortgage for raising your family!' 'A single bed? No, you need a big bed to share with the right lady when you find her!' 'I don't like this place, too small. Where is the family supposed to sit for Diwali?' 'This is not a nice neighbourhood. You don't know anyone on your street. What you need is a good community, please come back and live with us Kurpreet, you'll be happier!'
Honestly she's not been happy with my flat since Day 1, saying I need to change this and that, chastising me on finding the slightest speck of dust. At least she never stays. When I'm alone, that's when I truly feel free of the pressure and expectations I have had placed on me.
Now, in the time I've had in my flat, I've been able to enjoy all kinds of freedoms, particularly conducting my own research into arcane topics. It's crazy to think that some things we dream of can infact be reality, through the right methods of course. My researches led me to discovering the likes of body possession and bodysuits, methods to change a person's entire likeness! There were stories of people documenting their transformations from their old bodies into new ones and I wondered if I could do the same. Through a few contacts I was able to obtain a small glass container of powder.
To anyone it looked like some kind of seasoning, it really wouldn't have looked to out of place on a spice rack. According to my supplier, it was a powder that numbed the nerves and extracted the soul. More or less, anyone I sprinkled the powder on would become a bodysuit, and I'd also be able to undergo a transformation much like the stories I'd become enamoured by. I kept the container on me, you never know when I might find the right person to become the vessel I need. Of course I went about my usual life at the local clinic as the kindly Dr. Singh, but beneath the surface, an almost inhuman hunger was growing inside me.
It happened on one evening, as I drove home from the clinic, I parked my car in my usual spot in the carpark and made my way towards my flat's front door. Even as I locked my car door I could hear people talking from the direction of my door. Sounded like a bunch of rowdy men. I got my briefcase out of my car's boot, cautiously pocketing my glass container as a precaution. 'I'm just going into my flat' I told myself under my breath. Taking a deep breath I began to make my way to my door. The voices seemed to be sluggishly singing some chant. Maybe they were on their way back from a pub after a football match. I turned the corner and saw four men in tracksuits sitting on the steps leading up to my door, beer cans littered all over the floor. I stopped in my tracks looking slack-jawed at the sight.
'Oi, the fuck you looking at?' demanded one of them when he noticed me looking. The rest stopped singing and turned their attention on me. I cleared my throat. 'Pardon me, Gentlemen. Could I possibly get to my front door?' I asked politely. It took a moment then they started laughing. 'Did you boys get any of that?' asked the one closest to my door. 'Nah man, all I heard was 'Oh deary, deary me!'' said another one imitating an Indian accent. 'Welcome to my Kwik-E-Mart, please come again!' said the one that addressed me at first, and they all broke into outrageous laughter. I wasn't about to let a bunch of racists make me lose my cool. 'Look, you're in my doorway, haven't you all got somewhere better to be?' I demanded sternly, folding my arms. It was at that point the one who hadn't said a word yet stood up. He glared at me and began to walk menacingly over. He was a fair bit taller than I am, quite bulky too. I backed away a few steps, subtley reaching for my little glass container. 'Why don't you fuck off back to India, Curry-In-A-Hurry?' asked the man, staring me down. The other men started laughing again. I mustered up my courage, removing the cork behind my back. 'I was born here in England, my family's been living here two generations' I replied smartly, looking him in the eyes. The man lifted his head from my breathing space, seemingly impressed. 'Well look at that boys, guess he's one of us!' he shouted, turning to the others. I was stunned. 'What, really?' I asked curiously. 'Nah, fuck off!' he said, turning back and aiming a punch at me. I anticipated this and ducked to the side, spraying the contents of the container in his face. He coughed and shook his head, wiping the powder out of his eyes. 'You dirty little…little…' he slurred, gradually losing consciousness and slumping down on the ground. His friends looked on shocked. 'Terry?' asked one of them, getting up to get a better look. 'Guess your friend has had too much to drink' I said shrugging. 'Nah nah nah, you threw something on him!' cried another one, standing up and pointing accusingly at me. The first one approached Terry's body and shook his shoulder. Terry's whole body wobbled like jelly. 'Shit, you've killed him!' he said, looking at me. At this point I looked darkly into his eyes. 'You wanna take your chances with me or are you gonna go?' I asked calmly. The guy shook his head, inching along the wall. 'Fuck no! Let's get away from this Voodoo creep!' he yelled staggering off. The other two ran off after him, leaving me and Terry alone. I gave his body a little kick with my boot, then lifted his arm up, which flopped back down as I let go. 'Well then Terry, looks like your check-up's due!' I chuckled, unlocking my front door and hoisting him over my right shoulder.
Getting into my living room, I placed Terry on my sofa and placed my belongings on the counter to the side. Getting a better look at the man, he looked to be roughly the same age as me, short brown hair, clean-shaven. Dare I say kinda cute. I removed his clothes to get a better look at what was on offer, I was met with the sight of some nice biceps and muscles, a very nice chest and abs. I had no doubt this guy probably could have actually knocked me out if he'd had a decent shot. 'Nice body Terry! Shame about your awful mouth and problematic mind' I said tutting condescendingly. I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and took a good, long look at myself. Slim built, soft black hair, a tidy goatee and the glasses I always wore. Not bad, but there was room for improvement. It occurred to me this might just be the last time I see my face like this, but I was ready to give it all up. Staring at myself I began to unbutton my shirt, revealing my flat chest and stomach, my skinny arms and slightly hairy chest. I began to smile, this was like a dream come true. I undid my belt, unlaced my boots, pulled off my trousers, socks and boxers and stood there fully nude. I looked at myself one last time and nodded, turning my attention to Terry. I pulled him off the sofa and placed him carefully on the rug. Nervously, I prised open his mouth, the stretching sound of elastic filling the room. My cock twitched and a grin spread across my face as I looked down into the darkness within his body. It was time.
I began by placing my right foot into his mouth, pushing down my foot and shin began to disappear past his lips. I thought it best to sit down for this, so I did just that. Placing my left foot inside, the rubbery squeaking continued as I pushed my legs down, Terry's mouth seemingly consuming my kneecaps and upper legs. Looking further down his body, I could see his own legs were swelling and darkening slightly, going from pale white a delightful tan. I could only imagine what the outcome was going to look like and my dick began to harden in delight. I began to move my thighs inside, I took care to push my erectifying penis into Terry's mouth too, seeing it further down stretching his length out and amazingly restoring my foreskin. I'd been circumcised as a child, so I'd never really known what it was like to have an uncut cock, but I guess that was going to be something for me to explore in good time. Hands on the floor, I began to slide my belly and chest into the mouth, seeing them firm up and darken Terry's body, I moved my arms inside too and they filled out his arms and hands too. I let my new hands explore my body, this was nice. Like REALLY nice. I stood up and walked over to the mirror, checking it out. Abs, ass, I had it all going on. I bit my lip and locked eyes with my reflection. My old face atop this new body looked back. I took off my glasses and put them on the counter, and through blurred vision I matched up Terry's lower jaw with my own and pulled his head over mine. I could feel my face contorting as I stood there for a moment, eyes shut, letting the transformation finish. I felt my face and hair, with one hesitant breath I opened my eyes. My new reflection looked back at me, clear as day. Terry must have had good eyesight, I could kiss those glasses goodbye. My black hair was still there, my goatee had survived the transformation too. I looked good, Terry and I had created one gorgeous guy. I gave my new cock a playful tug with my left hand and my new ass a squeeze with the right. I could finally leave my old life behind and enjoy any man I wanted, be anything I wanted. Ruffling up my hair and massaging my biceps I remembered, I had kept an outfit aside for this occasion. I hurried to my bedroom and flung open the doors, searching through my coat hangers I found it; a plaid shirt, skinny jeans with chains on them, a G-string to perk up everything on offer, and a leather harness, for later. I'd see about officially leaving the flat tomorrow, for tonight I'm hitting every gay bar in town and getting me some long-desired action. Dr. Kurpreet was gone, any remnants are getting fucked out tonight. From here on out, I am Hari, a cute guy in a big town with big dreams of being the most lustful male stripper around!

The harmful effects of too much “screen time”, especially with social media, have been known for years. Social media is legendary for its addictive enticement. When Technocracy first defined itself in 1934 as the “Science of Social Engineering”, it launched technology 0n a trajectory to destroy mental health, not to help it. Now Technocrats are harnessing AI to push the world into a simulacrum, or anti-reality. ⁃ Patrick Wood, TN Editor.
Whether it’s internet rabbit holes or endless social media interactions, a new poll finds the more time you spend obsessing over what’s happening on your screen, the worse your mental health gets.
According to the survey, the average American feels like they lose three days per month while consuming online content. The poll of 2,000 Americans revealed that 36 days of our year are lost to scrolling, streaming, and bingeing content. It’s even worse for younger people. Gen Z Americans feel like they lose closer to five days per month.
The comprehensive study on media consumption trends by Talker Research also revealed that excessive content consumption can result in feelings of guilt, with the average respondent having three pangs of guilt per month. On average, Americans consume about six hours of content per day, with Gen Z Americans consuming closer to seven.
In honor of World Mental Health Day, the data split respondents based on their self-reported mental health and found that poor mental health and media consumption appear to have an uncomfortable connection.
Those with “very poor” mental health lose nearly six days per month to content consumption, while 19% of those who say their mental health is “very poor” estimate that they lose 15 or more days per month. In comparison, those with excellent and good mental health lose the fewest days (2.7).
This also aligned with feelings of guilt. Those with“very poor” mental health feel guilty most often — roughly seven times per month. Nearly half of those polled (42%) admit they feel like they consume “too much” media, and 36% say their mood is “often” negatively affected by something they see on social media.
Gen Z Americans were the most likely to feel like they consumed too much media, with 66% agreeing with that sentiment. Interestingly, those with “very poor” mental health were also found to be the most likely to use TikTok regularly (38%) and the most likely to report being “very likely” to be on their phone while watching something on television (46%).
Dr. Sham Singh, a Harbor UCLA-trained psychiatrist at Winit Clinic, offered three helpful tips for managing screen time to alleviate feelings of guilt.
Implement a “Tech-Free” Zone. “Creating designated areas where technology is off-limits in your home can significantly impact your daily habits,” Singh says in a statement. “For instance, by making your bedroom a tech-free zone, you promote better sleep hygiene and relaxation, free from the distractions of notifications and screens. Similarly, establishing a tech-free dining room encourages meaningful conversations and family bonding during meals. These intentional spaces reduce screen time, foster healthier interactions, or enjoy quiet moments.”
Set Phone-Free Intentions: “Before you reach for your phone, I advise you to take a moment to set a clear intention for its use,” says Singh. “Ask yourself what you need to accomplish—whether it’s checking messages, researching a topic, or responding to an email. This practice encourages a more mindful approach to technology, helping you avoid the trap of mindless scrolling. Having a defined purpose lets you stay focused on your task and minimize the likelihood of getting sidetracked by social media or other distractions.”
Reflect on Content Consumption: “Keeping a journal of your experiences with various types of content can be an enlightening practice,” Singh suggests. “After consuming media—be it social media, news articles, or videos—take a moment to jot down your feelings and thoughts. Did you feel inspired, informed, or drained? This reflection helps you discern which content enriches your life and which might feel like a time-waster. Over time, you’ll develop a clearer picture of your media consumption patterns, enabling you to make more informed choices about what to engage with in the future.”

Psychosis vs Schizophrenia: 5 Important Differences You Must Understand
Introduction:
Understanding psychosis vs schizophrenia is essential when discussing mental health conditions, as these terms are often used interchangeably but refer to different things. This article will explore the key differences between psychosis and schizophrenia, helping to clarify the confusion for those seeking better awareness.
What is Psychosis?
When comparing psychosis vs schizophrenia, psychosis is a broader term. It refers to a condition that affects how a person interprets reality, often leading to hallucinations, delusions, and a loss of contact with the real world. Psychosis can be a symptom of various conditions, including mental health disorders like schizophrenia, as well as drug abuse or physical illness.

What is Schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia, as part of the psychosis vs schizophrenia comparison, is a specific mental health disorder that includes episodes of psychosis. However, schizophrenia is a more complex, long-term disorder affecting not only a person’s perception of reality but also their cognitive abilities, behavior, and emotional responses. Schizophrenia often involves chronic symptoms that need lifelong management.
5 Key Differences Between Psychosis and Schizophrenia
1. Definition and Scope
Psychosis: When considering psychosis vs schizophrenia, psychosis is a symptom and not a diagnosis. It can arise from multiple conditions, including substance abuse or other mental health disorders.
Schizophrenia: Schizophrenia is a distinct psychiatric disorder that includes psychosis but also involves other cognitive and behavioral challenges.
2. Duration and Course
Psychosis: In the psychosis vs schizophrenia context, psychosis can be temporary, triggered by external factors like drugs or stress, and may resolve with treatment.
Schizophrenia: Schizophrenia, however, is a lifelong condition that requires ongoing treatment and can involve multiple episodes of psychosis.
3. Symptoms
Psychosis: The symptoms of psychosis, when comparing psychosis vs schizophrenia, include hallucinations, delusions, and confused thinking. These symptoms can appear and disappear depending on the underlying cause.
Schizophrenia: Schizophrenia involves not just psychotic symptoms, but also cognitive difficulties, disorganized thoughts, and emotional blunting. These symptoms tend to persist, making schizophrenia a more comprehensive disorder. For more information visit Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
4. Diagnosis
Psychosis: Diagnosing psychosis can be challenging as it can be a part of various conditions. In the psychosis vs schizophrenia distinction, psychosis is considered a symptom of schizophrenia, but can also be present in disorders like bipolar disorder or depression.
Schizophrenia: Schizophrenia is diagnosed based on long-term symptoms, including psychosis. For a diagnosis of schizophrenia, symptoms must persist for at least six months.
5. Treatment Approach
Psychosis: Treatment for psychosis focuses on addressing the root cause. In the psychosis vs schizophrenia comparison, psychosis might be resolved once the triggering factor, such as drug use, is treated.
Schizophrenia: Schizophrenia requires long-term, ongoing treatment, involving both psychotherapy and support. Managing schizophrenia involves addressing psychosis along with other chronic symptoms like cognitive impairment. For further information visit World Health Organization (WHO)
Can Psychosis Develop into Schizophrenia?
In the psychosis vs schizophrenia comparison, it is important to note that while psychosis can occur in various mental health conditions, not all individuals who experience psychosis will go on to develop schizophrenia. Early intervention and treatment are key to preventing psychosis from evolving into more severe mental health issues like schizophrenia.
Early Intervention and Help
Whether facing psychosis vs schizophrenia, early intervention is crucial. Both conditions require timely diagnosis and treatment for better long-term outcomes. Seeking professional help is the first step toward managing either psychosis or schizophrenia effectively. For more information visit National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
Conclusion
In the debate of psychosis vs schizophrenia, it’s essential to recognize that while these terms are related, they represent different aspects of mental health. Psychosis is a symptom that can occur in various mental health conditions, whereas schizophrenia is a long-term disorder that includes psychosis along with other cognitive and emotional challenges. Understanding the differences between psychosis vs schizophrenia can lead to better diagnosis, treatment, and support for individuals affected by these conditions.

Singh Family x child!reader(PLATONIC)
A/n: I’m writing this on google docs, so I hope this is good. I don’t see NEARLY enough Sweet Tooth x reader so I took matters into my own hands. Hope you all like this! Bye-bye!
Word count: 468
Everything had gotten worse ever since Rani, your mother, had gotten the Sick. Your father, Dr. Aditya Singh had stopped his medical practice as a way of avoiding going completely numb.
Years later, after learning that your mother wasn’t contagious, and moving into a community where nobody knew about your mother’s health aside from Dr. Bell. But she had stopped working because of her cancer, so your father had stepped up to become the doctor everyone looks to when in times of need.
A few weeks ago, you and your parents had gone to a community party, but had lost yet another neighbor as your father had diagnosed him with the Sick, you had all sang and some cried looking on at the burning house.
Soon, nobody had seen Nancie for about three days, and you, a young 12-year-old child, had no possible idea of where she was.
Your mother and father had gone to the clinic, something about a shipment? You had not a clue about it, but had decided to stay home. As usual, you stayed out of business and work, just like you always have, and you always will.
So as you were peacefully making a snack, the door had bursted open, you saw your parents being shoved inside your home. Then, in your moment of confusion and shock, a neighbor grabs your arm and sits you on a chair. Soon, yet another neighbor starts to wrap saran wrap around your torso.
You recognize this, this is what happens when someone has the Sick. Tears are falling down your face as you call out to your parents, asking what is happening.
You look to see your parents covered in saran wrap as well. They have understandably very sad and scared looks on their faces. As this is going on, all of your belongings are being doused in gasoline.
Your neighbors push your chairs together, and on one side, Rani holds your hand the best she can, and on the other, Aditya grasping your hand within his. Both parents whispering sweet nothings into yours and each other’s ears. Sad apologies are said to all people, whether it be something small or big, it was said.
Teary eyes looking at each other the best they can, and looking at the flames engulfing their once beautiful home. And you, looking up above at the ceiling, imagining the beautiful stars beyond what you see. You, crying while saying your last words to your parents, only wishing to have lived a better life.
